Wandsworth’s waste collection service gets a thumbs-up

The universal service, available to every household in Wandsworth, simplifies the disposal of large items such as mattresses, old furniture, and white goods

Wandsworth’s free bulky waste collection service has quickly become a favourite among residents in a significant move towards maintaining cleanliness and order in the borough. Launched as part of the Cleaner Borough Plan, the service has seen an impressive uptake, with over 5,000 bookings in just two months. Residents have been overwhelmingly positive, describing the service as “extremely easy and effective” and “immensely helpful.”

The universal service, available to every household in Wandsworth, simplifies the disposal of large items such as mattresses, old furniture, and white goods. Under the Cleaner Borough Plan, each household is entitled to two free bulky waste collections annually. This initiative not only saves residents time and money but also reduces the hassle associated with disposing of large items. The service has already prevented thousands of unnecessary trips to the tip, with an average rating of 4.8 stars out of 5 in a recent survey.

Katie from Tooting expressed her satisfaction with the service, saying, “I found the bulky waste collection extremely easy and effective. I am very happy Wandsworth offers this service, and it made moving house so much easier.” Similarly, Alex from Putney praised the service, stating, “No issues, a completely smooth operation from start to finish! It’s a really useful service to have free access to a couple of times a year, especially when doing a big clear out without personal access to a vehicle. Really happy with the service and with the council generally.”

The service’s convenience is evident in its quick response times. Most households can book a collection within a week, and the collection occurs on the same day as their regular bin and recycling services. This has been particularly beneficial for busy residents who find it difficult to make trips to the tip. Jen, a Wandsworth resident, shared her experience, saying, “I don’t have a car, so it’s difficult to make trips to the tip. It was great to see two collections are free, it was easy to arrange, and it was collected as promised!”

Another resident from Nine Elms highlighted the seamless nature of the service, saying, “It was smooth and easy. I left the items outside the night before, and when I got back from work, they were gone.” This feedback underscores the service’s effectiveness in addressing the needs of residents who may not have easy access to transportation or the time to manage waste disposal themselves.

“Spring is the perfect time to have a clear-out, and we’re proud to be making that easier for our residents. This gold-standard service is part of our Cleaner Borough Plan, which also includes our commitment to weekly waste and recycling collections and expanding much-loved Mega Skip Days. We’re proud to deliver services that make life easier while still keeping Council Tax the lowest in the country.”
Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for Environment

With spring approaching, many residents are likely to engage in spring cleaning or moving into new homes. The bulky waste collection service offers a convenient solution for decluttering and disposing of old furniture. Importantly, residents do not need to be at home for the collection. They can simply leave the items outside their property, and the council will handle the rest.

Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for Environment, expressed her pride in the service, saying, “Spring is the perfect time to have a clear-out, and we’re proud to be making that easier for our residents. This gold-standard service is part of our Cleaner Borough Plan, which also includes our commitment to weekly waste and recycling collections and expanding much-loved Mega Skip Days. We’re proud to deliver services that make life easier while still keeping Council Tax the lowest in the country.”

Residents can request up to four bulky items or 12 sacks of waste per collection. The ease of use and the significant benefits to the community have made Wandsworth’s free bulky waste collection service a standout initiative. As the Cleaner Borough Plan continues to unfold, residents can look forward to a cleaner, more organised living environment, supported by innovative and convenient waste management solutions.
