A bustling Sidcup Library was transformed into a lively, intimate gig venue last month as part of the borough’s #CelebratingBexley initiative, drawing a full house to witness the exceptional talents of young local musicians.
The sold-out event, featured performers from the award-winning ArtsTrain programme – a charity dedicated to offering free, high-quality music opportunities to young people across Bexley, Bromley and neighbouring areas. All the performers were under the age of 18 and presented a programme of original music, which ranged from heartfelt solo pieces to vibrant ensemble numbers, showcasing the depth of creativity being nurtured in South East London.
The unique setting of the Sidcup Library added to the charm, as the familiar rows of bookcases gave way to speakers, microphones and melodies, creating an atmosphere brimming with community spirit, youth energy, and artistic flair.

“Events like this show the importance of giving young people a platform to share their voice and celebrate their talent – and The Storyteller is the perfect setting for that.”
Brian Bishop, Cabinet Member for Communities
ArtsTrain runs a weekly creative music programme at The Exchange in Erith, where young participants engage in songwriting, collaborative performances and musical exploration. The aim of the initiative is to help young artists grow in both confidence and skill, while giving them a platform to express their voice through original compositions.
Speaking at the event, Brian Bishop, Cabinet Member for Communities, praised the transformation of the space and the powerful message behind the showcase. “It was fantastic to see Sidcup Library come alive with music, creativity and community spirit,” he said. “Events like this show the importance of giving young people a platform to share their voice and celebrate their talent – and The Storyteller is the perfect setting for that.”
Annabell Puddick, representing ArtsTrain, said the event was a proud moment for the team and the performers. “It was wonderful to see our Academies’ original music come to life at Sidcup Library. The event also provided a meaningful opportunity for our young musicians to connect with new friends and alumni members who had been through our programme previously,” she said.
The evening was part of #CelebratingBexley, a borough-wide series of arts, cultural and community events running throughout 2025. The initiative commemorates key local anniversaries while placing a strong emphasis on creativity, inclusion and local talent. From storytelling sessions to theatre productions and music showcases, the programme is designed to engage residents of all ages in a year-long celebration of what makes Bexley unique.
The success of the Sidcup performance reinforces the growing recognition of youth arts programmes in the borough – not just as extracurricular activities, but as vital cultural contributions in their own right.
As #CelebratingBexley continues, residents are encouraged to follow the campaign on social media to stay informed about future events and opportunities. Whether it’s a concert tucked away in a library, a pop-up gallery, or a community parade, there’s no shortage of chances to experience the vibrancy of Bexley’s creative community in 2025.
