The Prime Minister’s visit comes just over a week before the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, which was the largest Nazi concentration camp.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reaffirmed his commitment to fighting antisemitism during an emotional visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, marking a poignant moment ahead of the 80th anniversary of the camp’s liberation.
While in Poland, Sir Keir also held talks with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, discussing defence, energy security, and the shared commitment to supporting Ukraine.
Reflecting on the atrocities of the Holocaust, Sir Keir described the experience as “utterly harrowing,” emphasising the chilling reminders of industrialised genocide. Joined by his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer, who is Jewish, the visit underscored the ongoing relevance of Holocaust remembrance amid a rise in global antisemitism.
Sir Keir criticised the inconsistency in the application of the phrase “never again,” calling for stronger action against antisemitism worldwide. His visit follows a trip to Kyiv, where he signed a historic 100-year security pact with Ukraine.
