Niclas Fullkrug is set to make his return to the West Ham United matchday squad after recovering from a hamstring injury that kept him out for two and a half months. The German striker, who was injured during Graham Potter’s first match as head coach in a January 10 FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa, is now fit enough to rejoin the squad for the Premier League encounter against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
The 32-year-old will start on the bench, having worked diligently to regain his fitness. However, the game will come too soon for another player who also suffered a hamstring injury in the same FA Cup tie—winger Crysencio Summerville, who is still in the process of recovery at Rush Green training ground.
“Summerville won’t be available, but Fullkrug has been training with the group and will likely be in the squad,” Potter explained in his pre-match press conference. “We’re just looking to build up his minutes. He hasn’t played competitive football in a while and had a significant injury, but he’s training well and improving his fitness, so he’ll be part of the squad.”
Despite his readiness to return, Potter noted that there’s no substitute for competitive Premier League minutes. “You can do all the rehab and training in the world, but nothing replicates the intensity of Premier League games,” he said. “The next step is for him to get back into competitive action, and whatever role we can offer, he’ll give his best. It’s great to have him back in the squad.”
Potter also expressed his excitement for the return of Premier League football after West Ham’s 17-day break, which followed the March international window and the FA Cup sixth-round weekend. Their last top-flight game was a 2-2 draw at Everton on March 15.
“I feel good and I’m looking forward to getting back to it,” Potter said. “The schedule is what it is, and we can’t change it. We just hope the players who were away on international duty had positive experiences, while those who stayed worked well with us. We’re all looking forward to the game,” he added.
With Fullkrug returning to the fold and the Premier League action resuming, West Ham United will be eager to build momentum as they face Wolverhampton on Wednesday.
