In a statement, ICC Chair Jay Shah expressed excitement about the announcement, describing the selection of Fairgrounds as a crucial milestone in the sport’s preparation for its Olympic return
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the Fairgrounds in Pomona, California, as the venue for cricket at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Known officially as Fairplex, the 500-acre event complex has a rich history, hosting the Los Angeles County Fair since 1922, and will now play host to the return of cricket to the Olympic stage after a 128-year hiatus.
In a statement, ICC Chair Jay Shah expressed excitement about the announcement, describing the selection of Fairgrounds as a crucial milestone in the sport’s preparation for its Olympic return. “This is a significant step for cricket’s journey back to the Olympics, and we are thrilled to partner with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to ensure cricket’s success at LA28,” Shah said.
Cricket’s inclusion at the 2028 Games marks the first time the sport will be featured since the 1900 Paris Olympics. The cricket competition will take place in a fast-paced, exciting T20 format, with six teams each for both the men’s and women’s events. This format, recognized as key to cricket’s global expansion, is expected to engage new audiences and elevate the sport’s profile on the Olympic stage.
In addition to cricket, LA28 will also welcome five other new sports: baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash. The decision to include cricket follows an IOC meeting in Mumbai in October 2023, where the sport’s Olympic return was officially approved.
The T20 format, which has seen success in other multi-sport events such as the Asian Games and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, is seen as an ideal choice for the Olympic Games, combining fast action with global appeal.
Shah further expressed gratitude towards LA28 and the IOC, acknowledging their support in making cricket’s Olympic return a reality. “We look forward to working together with the IOC, LA28, and our Members to prepare for the Games and make cricket a huge success in Los Angeles,” he concluded. Cricket’s Olympic comeback promises to be a landmark moment for the sport, bringing its thrilling action to a global audience.
