Joe Root will play his first ODI since the 2023 World Cup when England take on India in Nagpur on Thursday, as reported by BBC.
The 34-year-old returns to the XI at number three, following openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett. England have opted for Jacob Bethell at number seven over Jamie Overton, while the pace attack features Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, and Saqib Mahmood. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith misses out due to a calf injury.
The three-match series, starting at 08:00 GMT, serves as England’s build-up to the Champions Trophy next month. This marks their first 50-over series under white-ball coach Brendon McCullum after losing their past three ODI series, including a 4-1 T20 defeat to India.
Root last played an ODI in England’s World Cup exit against Pakistan in November 2023. With the Champions Trophy and the 2027 World Cup in sight, this series begins England’s long-term plans in the format. Though a key figure in England’s 2019 World Cup win, Root has struggled for consistency in ODIs, averaging 28.95 in 28 matches since then and going century-less since his unbeaten hundred against West Indies in that tournament.
Captain Jos Buttler remains confident in Root’s abilities: “He is one of the greats in all formats. I’m excited to see him in this phase of his career. Look at what he’s done in Tests after stepping down as captain—he’s back with that cheeky smile. I expect him to do the same here.”
Buttler also emphasized England’s commitment to an aggressive style despite their T20 series loss: “We played well in phases but never long enough to take control. It’s important we stay on track with the way we want to play.”
