Mary Earps Embraces England Goalkeeper Competition

Having moved from Manchester United to PSG last summer, Earps has embraced this fresh chapter in her career, focused on improving and continuing her development as a player

Mary Earps believes that the competition for her starting place in the England team will only make her a better goalkeeper as she prepares for the Euro 2025 tournament. The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) keeper, who has been a mainstay for the Lionesses under Sarina Wiegman, is welcoming the challenge posed by Hannah Hampton as both players vie for the No. 1 spot this summer.

Earps told The Guardian, “You need to have strength in depth when you’re a top team in order to win top competitions, and we have a lot of strength in depth here, which is great.” She emphasized that this competition is a positive force for her development, saying, “For me, it’s all about how you use it, and I’ve used the situation as a challenge. I think I’ve taken it full-on in my stride, and used it to try and better myself. That’s what I’m always trying to do.”

Having moved from Manchester United to PSG last summer, Earps has embraced this fresh chapter in her career, focused on improving and continuing her development as a player. “That’s why I moved to PSG, to just try to improve and develop as a player, and that’s what I feel I’ve continued to do this year,” she said. “It’s a mentality thing – I’ve used it in a positive way. I’ve tried to push myself forward and I’ve been working really hard behind closed doors.”

Earps rose to prominence as a crucial figure in England’s recent success, and now, in her new surroundings in Paris, she is finding a sense of “escape” and clarity. Reflecting on her move to PSG, she admitted, “It’s been more refreshing than I thought it would be. The last few years have been unbelievable, a massive acceleration I could never have predicted, and what’s come with that is some incredible opportunities but also a lot of noise.”
This shift to PSG, she explained, has given her the chance to focus solely on her development as a footballer, away from the constant attention that comes with success. “I really wanted to get into a little focus zone and just totally concentrate on my development as a footballer,” Earps shared.

“Careers are short and I really wanted to maximise mine. I’m trying to squeeze out every last bit of potential that I have in myself and put the blinkers on a little bit – it’s been nice to escape and just be totally all-in with trying to push myself to another level.”

As Earps prepares for the upcoming European Championship, she is committed to using the competition for her place and her move to PSG as opportunities for growth. With a clear focus on self-improvement, the goalkeeper is determined to continue her evolution and bring her best form to both her club and the national team.
