Reds Stay Top with 2-1 Victory

Wolves struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in the first half, but Matheus Cunha provided their best effort with a well-struck free-kick that curled just wide of the post

Liverpool secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Sunday, maintaining their seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

The Reds started aggressively, dominating possession and creating early chances. Diogo Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold both tested Wolves’ goalkeeper Jose Sa within the opening 10 minutes. Their persistence paid off in the 15th minute when Luis Diaz found the breakthrough. A slick counter-attack involving Jota and Mohamed Salah saw Jota skip past Matt Doherty before setting up Diaz, who bundled the ball past Sa with help from a slight deflection off Toti Gomes.

Liverpool pressed relentlessly for a second, with Jota coming close multiple times. He saw a header sail over the bar, had a shot blocked by Gomes, and forced Sa into a fine save. Dominik Szoboszlai also threatened with a low-driven effort that narrowly missed the target. Their dominance was rewarded in the 37th minute when Salah doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Diaz was brought down by Sa inside the box.

Wolves struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in the first half, but Matheus Cunha provided their best effort with a well-struck free-kick that curled just wide of the post.

After the break, Wolves emerged with renewed determination, pressing higher up the pitch. They nearly pulled a goal back early in the second half, but Alisson Becker stood tall to deny Marshall Munetsi in a one-on-one situation. Liverpool thought they had won another penalty when Jota went down under a challenge from Emmanuel Agbadou, but VAR overturned the decision after a review.

The visitors finally found their breakthrough in the 67th minute. Cunha, who had been Wolves’ liveliest attacker, unleashed a stunning curling effort from outside the box, leaving Alisson with no chance as the ball nestled into the top corner. With momentum shifting, Wolves pushed forward in search of an equalizer, creating nervy moments for Liverpool’s defense.

The hosts, however, stood firm. Jarell Quansah produced a crucial sliding tackle to deny Tommy Doyle a clear shot on goal, while Virgil van Dijk marshaled the backline effectively to see out the victory. Despite Wolves’ late pressure, Liverpool held on to claim all three points.

With this win, Liverpool remains seven points clear of second-placed Arsenal. However, they face a daunting run of fixtures, including away clashes against Aston Villa and Manchester City, before a home encounter with Newcastle United.
