Now, back in England with Chelsea, Walsh is set to bring her wealth of experience and success to the WSL as she embarks on a new chapter in her career…reports Asian Lite News
Following a successful spell in Spain with Barcelona, Keira Walsh has made her return to England, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal with Chelsea FC. The midfielder revealed that the key factor in her decision was the desire to be closer to home.
Homesickness Played a Role in Walsh’s Decision
‘It was a massive motivator. I’ll be honest, I didn’t realise how difficult it would be to be away from my family and friends when I went abroad,’ Walsh admitted. ‘It was such a quick transfer that I didn’t have time to process how I would be on my own. Sometimes, it was actually really difficult, and I did struggle away from the pitch.’
Walsh also shared that having England teammate Ellie Roebuck join her in Spain made things easier, but the pull of home remained strong. ‘This season was a bit easier because Ellie Roebuck came in, and me and her have been such good friends for a long time. It’s no secret that I wanted to come back and play closer to my friends and family. Just having my family back in the stands is something I’ve wanted for a long time. When I spoke to Chelsea, I knew this was the right move,’ she said.
A Decorated Career with City and Barcelona
Walsh’s senior career began with Blackburn Rovers before she joined Manchester City as a teenager in 2014. She quickly became a key figure for the club, helping City lift their first major honour, the League Cup, in her debut campaign. In 2016, she played a crucial role in City’s domestic double-winning season, claiming the Women’s Super League title and the FA Cup.
During her eight-year stint with City, Walsh added two more FA Cup trophies to her collection. She scored the opening goal in the 2019 final against West Ham and played a full match in the 2020 final victory over Everton.
In the summer of 2022, Walsh made a high-profile move to Barcelona, where she continued to excel. During her two seasons in Spain, she won an impressive eight trophies, including six domestic titles and two UEFA Champions League crowns.
A Vital Presence for England
On the international stage, Walsh has been a crucial player for the Lionesses since her senior debut in November 2017. She represented England at the 2019 World Cup in France and played a key role in their victorious 2022 European Championship campaign. Her performance in the final against Germany at Wembley earned her the Player of the Match award and a spot in the Team of the Tournament.
Now, back in England with Chelsea, Walsh is set to bring her wealth of experience and success to the WSL as she embarks on a new chapter in her career.
