Scotch Whisky becomes the first international product to gain legal protection in Argentina as a Geographical Indication
In a landmark move, Argentina has granted Scotch Whisky Geographical Indication (GI) status, making it the first international product to receive such recognition in the country. This legal protection underscores the unique qualities that define Scotch Whisky, including centuries of craftsmanship, distinctive production methods, and the unmistakable Scottish character that sets it apart from imitations.
The GI status ensures that products labelled as Scotch Whisky are genuine and adhere to strict production standards. This measure is crucial in combating counterfeit products, thereby giving consumers confidence in the authenticity of the Scotch they purchase. For distillers, it provides rea
ssurance that their reputation will not be undermined by imitation products in the Argentine market. This development also highlights the growing global demand for authentic British products. In 2024, British food and drink exports reached record levels, with GI products accounting for approximately 25% of all UK food and drink exports. The estimated annual value of these exports exceeds £6 billion, reflecting the significant economic impact of such products.
Daniel Zeichner, Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs, expressed his enthusiasm for the decision, stating, “Argentina’s legal protection of Scotch Whisky marks another triumph for this world-class British export. In just six months, we’ve driven a breakthrough trade agreement with India while securing legal protections for dozens of beloved British products across the globe – from the markets of São Paulo to the streets of Tokyo. This government won’t stop here. We’re unlocking doors for UK exporters worldwide, putting British products on more shelves and tables – delivering real economic growth as part of our Plan for Change.”
Trade Minister Douglas Alexander echoed this sentiment, noting that Scotch Whisky’s GI status in Argentina is a testament to the strength of trade ties between the two countries. “This is another win for an industry already bolstered by our deal with India, which slashes whisky tariffs by half immediately and then down even further in the years to come. This demonstrates our commitment to boosting Scotland’s businesses and delivering economic growth under the Plan for Change.”
Scottish Secretary Ian Murray also celebrated the news, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the UK Government and the Scotch Whisky Association. “There is no substitute for authentic Scotch Whisky, and it’s fantastic that our national drink – and one of our biggest exports – has received the protection it deserves. Opening up new markets and expanding existing ones for our producers is key to growing the economy and the UK Government’s Plan for Change. Scotland’s food and drink industry and our Brand Scotland campaign will play an important part in that. This is excellent news for all the whisky producers who put Scotland on the global stage with our world-famous spirit. Salud!”
The recognition of Scotch Whisky’s GI status in Argentina follows a series of successful trade agreements and protections secured by the UK Government. Just months ago, 39 additional British specialities were granted protected status in Japan, and a landmark trade deal with India saw whisky tariffs slashed by 50%. These measures have created substantial commercial opportunities for UK businesses overseas, contributing to the government’s Plan for Change.
As the UK continues to expand its global trade footprint, the protection and promotion of its iconic products remain a priority. The GI status for Scotch Whisky in Argentina is not just a victory for the whisky industry but a testament to the enduring appeal and quality of British products worldwide.
