Over the past year, StepChange has already helped more than 500 Lambeth residents reduce their debt by £280,000
Lambeth is expanding financial support for residents by partnering with debt advice charity StepChange. With the cost of living and housing crises pushing more people into financial hardship, the council aims to provide easier access to debt assistance.
Research shows that 92% of those struggling with debt regret not seeking advice sooner. Over the past year, StepChange has already helped more than 500 Lambeth residents reduce their debt by £280,000. This new partnership seeks to reach even more people in need.
Announcing the initiative during Debt Awareness Week (March 24–30), Cllr Nanda Manley-Browne highlighted the importance of tackling debt early and breaking the stigma around financial struggles.

Vanessa Northam, Partnerships Director at StepChange, emphasized the urgency of support amid rising living costs, stressing the need for free and impartial debt advice.
Cllr Fred Cowell noted that Lambeth is the first UK council to form this partnership, reinforcing its commitment to tackling poverty, low wages, and financial insecurity.
