First Sundays Just Got Tastier in Lewisham

The much-loved Lewisham Food Market is making its return on Sunday 6 April in Cornmill Gardens.

Lewisham Food Market is making a long-awaited comeback, bringing a vibrant mix of food, drink, and community spirit back to Cornmill Gardens. The relaunch is set for Sunday, 6 April, and will be held on the first Sunday of each month thereafter.

The revival of this much-loved market has been made possible through funding from Lewisham Council, which commissioned its return and awarded the tender to The Food Market Company. This family-run business has already established a strong presence in South London, operating the successful Catford Food Market and the popular weekly Food & Farmers’ Market at Beckenham Place Park.

With a reputation for creating bustling and inclusive community spaces, The Food Market Company promises an exciting line-up of traders offering street food from around the globe, as well as local produce, sweet treats, honey, chutneys, and marinades. The market aims to provide an engaging atmosphere where families and friends can gather to enjoy great food and a sense of togetherness.

Councillor Ese Erheriene, Cabinet Member for Business, Jobs and Skills, welcomed the market’s return, highlighting its potential to boost the local economy.

“I’m delighted to welcome back Lewisham Food Market. Markets play a crucial role in boosting our local economy, bringing communities together, supporting independent businesses, and making Lewisham an exciting destination to visit. Our vision is to grow an ambitious and inclusive local economy, and this market relaunch is a fantastic example of that vision in action. Investing in local businesses, fostering entrepreneurship, and creating thriving public spaces is exactly how we ensure that growth benefits all of our residents.”

Charlotte and Will, the brother-sister duo behind The Food Market Company, have expressed their enthusiasm about reviving the market and bringing their expertise to Lewisham.

“Having both grown up in South London, with me living in Lewisham for seven years, we have first-hand experience of what makes this part of London so special,” Charlotte said. “Lewisham has developed so much over the years, and we felt it was the right time to relaunch Lewisham Food Market. The foundations built in 2023 were fantastic, and now, we want to take it even further in this amazing borough that’s so close to our hearts.”

The Food Market Company is committed to supporting local entrepreneurs and providing opportunities for small businesses to flourish. Will emphasised the importance of markets in fostering a strong local economy.

“We’re so lucky to operate markets in South London, where diverse cultures shape every corner of our communities. Markets bring people together. They create jobs, support small businesses, and enhance the sense of community. We’re especially proud to have helped so many grassroots traders grow with us, with some even going on to open brick-and-mortar businesses.”

Lewisham Food Market is set to provide a welcoming space for traders and visitors alike, offering a chance to experience the borough’s diverse culinary scene while also supporting small businesses. The market will run from 10am to 3pm and is free to attend. It is also dog-friendly, making it an ideal weekend outing for families, food lovers, and local residents looking to explore the best of Lewisham’s food culture.

As the market prepares to make its grand return, there is a growing sense of excitement about its impact on the community. With a commitment to quality food, sustainability, and local business support, Lewisham Food Market is not just about great flavours—it’s about strengthening the local economy and creating a thriving social hub for all to enjoy.
