In what officials are calling an extraordinary exception to tragedy, Ramesh Vishwash Kumar, a 40-year-old British citizen, has miraculously survived the devastating Air India Flight AI171 crash that killed 241 others.
Seated in 11A, Ramesh was among the passengers onboard the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad Airport en route to London Gatwick. While early reports confirmed there were no survivors, shocking video footage surfaced Thursday morning showing a man – later identified as Ramesh, getting up and walking unaided near the burning wreckage.
Ramesh is currently being treated at a hospital in Ahmedabad for non-life-threatening injuries, including minor burns and fractures. Speaking briefly to the media from his hospital bed, he said,
“I don’t remember much… just a loud sound and then everything went dark. I woke up and people were screaming. I still don’t know how I made it out.”
His survival has brought a rare moment of hope amid the tragedy, which saw the Dreamliner crash into the mess hall of a local medical college, killing all others on board and several on the ground.
