Actor George Wendt, who rose to fame on the sitcom Cheers as the charming pub regular Norm Peterson, passed away at the age of 76. On May 20, 2025, Wendt died quietly while sleeping at home, according to his publicist. His passing signifies the end of a legacy based on kindness, humour, and one of the most recognisable catchphrases in television: “Norm!”
Fans of the long-running NBC series loved Wendt’s portrayal of Norm, an easygoing, beer-drinking everyman, which won him six straight Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
From the show’s 1982 premiere to its 1993 finale, he appeared in all 275 Cheers episodes. His character’s frequent arrival at the bar, which is always met with a chant of “Norm!” became one of the show’s most cherished hallmarks.
Born and raised in Chicago, Wendt started his comedic career with the renowned Second City improv group before moving on to television and films. In addition to Cheers, he appeared on crossover and spin-off shows such as Frasier, Wings, and even The Simpsons, consistently playing the dependable Norm.
Wendt also had a prosperous career in theatre and film, appearing in films such as Guilty by Suspicion, Forever Young, and Fletch. He also starred in acclaimed Broadway plays like Art, Elf: The Musical, and Hairspray.
Wendt’s family said in a statement that he was a “loyal friend to those fortunate enough to know him and a devoted family man.” He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, actress Bernadette Birkett, along with their three children, two stepchildren, and his nephew, actor Jason Sudeikis.
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world, with fellow Cheers cast members and fans remembering Wendt not only for his comedic talent but for the kindness and authenticity he brought to every role.
