BEfriend, a West London-based charity, is calling on volunteers to join its Linked Minds program, a befriending service aimed at supporting individuals in Hounslow who experience loneliness due to mental health challenges. The campaign, which targets local residents, seeks to bolster the charity’s efforts in offering companionship to those in need.

The program matches volunteers with people who are isolated, offering them an opportunity to engage in one-on-one conversations for an hour or two each week. These interactions aim to build friendships and alleviate feelings of loneliness.

BEfriend provides full training for volunteers, ensuring they are well-prepared to work with individuals who have complex mental health needs. Each volunteer is also paired with a coordinator to support them throughout their journey. The charity notes that the experience gained can be a valuable addition to courses in counselling, psychotherapy, or psychology. However, volunteers do not need to have formal training in these fields—anyone with a genuine desire to help is encouraged to apply.

Volunteers will collaborate with coordinators and befriendees to develop tailored plans aimed at building a social network and encouraging a brighter outlook on life. This may include suggesting local clubs or group activities to join.

Councillor Lily Bath, Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Public Health and Integration, praised the initiative: “Having a mental health problem can leave people feeling isolated, so Linked Minds is a really valuable project that helps people in Hounslow who need it most. The Council is delighted to support BEfriend’s amazing work in Hounslow alongside our health partners, and I can’t wait to see the new volunteers who come forward to build more life-changing relationships like Shivam and Roger’s.”

Rachel Hill, Chief Executive of BEfriend, expressed her excitement about expanding the program: “Our Linked Minds project has already supported many people with mental health problems in Ealing and Hounslow, but there is still significant demand. To meet this need, we are seeking more volunteers, and I know there are many kind-hearted people in Hounslow who want to make a difference. As Shivam mentions in our video, being a Linked Minds volunteer is a rewarding journey that offers a deep sense of pride and fulfilment. We are moved by the impact it has had on Roger, and we look forward to supporting even more individuals in the future.”
