Hounslow Council has successfully delivered a series of traffic improvement projects under the Community-Led Scheme (CLS), a three-year initiative aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing congestion. Funded through the Council’s General Fund Capital Programme, the scheme allocated £1.5 million to projects identified by residents, businesses, and local councillors.
Saxon Avenue Junction Revamp – Feltham
In Feltham, local concerns about congestion, parking issues, and pedestrian safety at the Saxon Avenue roundabout prompted significant changes. The roundabout was replaced with a modern “through-about,” allowing vehicles to pass straight through without restriction, while maintaining a one-way carriageway for property access. Safety was enhanced with an extended pedestrian footway, tactile paving at crossings, and a speed table to curb speeding. The project was completed in October 2024.
Worton Estate Road Safety – Isleworth
Residents of the Worton Estate in Isleworth raised safety concerns about a junction with wide mouths and inadequate pedestrian facilities, especially with schools nearby. The improvement works included a new pram ramp, pedestrian crossings with tactile paving, and measures to slow vehicle traffic. Construction wrapped up in November 2024, addressing the community’s longstanding concerns.
Southall Lane Cycle and Pedestrian Upgrades – Hounslow
Cyclists and pedestrians in Hounslow flagged safety issues on Southall Lane due to insufficient infrastructure. Improvements included widened footways, new pedestrian and cycle crossings, upgraded zebra crossings, and additional signage. The roundabout was also expanded to better accommodate HGVs and buses, enhancing traffic flow. These works were completed in January 2025.
Councillor Katherine Dunne, lead member for Climate, Environment, and Transport, emphasized the Council’s commitment to active travel, “We are dedicated to making it safer and easier for residents to walk, cycle, and wheel around the borough. These projects reflect the importance of community input in shaping our transport infrastructure. The CLS initiative continues to invite ideas from the community to identify areas needing traffic and safety upgrades, ensuring Hounslow remains a safer, more accessible borough for all.
