Jack Quaid Praises Genre-Defying Film ‘Companion’

Jack Quaid has expressed admiration for the “unique” tone of his latest film, Companion. The 32-year-old actor stars as Josh, whose weekend getaway with friends turns chaotic after revealing that his girlfriend Iris (played by Sophie Thatcher) is a companion robot.

Speaking to Collider, Quaid shared his fascination with the film’s inability to fit neatly into a single genre. “That’s what I love about it,” he said. “I remember reading the script and thinking, ‘I don’t know what genre this movie is.’ And I love that Drew Hancock has created his own unique tone.”

The project faced an unexpected delay due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, with filming split between summer and winter in upstate New York. Quaid described the surreal experience of maintaining continuity while battling freezing temperatures in t-shirts for summer scenes. “We had people wheeling carts of fake green trees into the background just to make it seem like it was still summer,” he recounted.

Despite the disruption, Quaid credited director Drew Hancock with turning the break into a creative advantage. “By the time we got back, the tone was even sharper and more specific because he knew exactly what he wanted. He trimmed all the fat and came back so lean and pointed,” Quaid explained.

The actor, known for his roles in The Boys and Scream, revealed that he is currently leaning toward movie projects over television. “Right now, I think I’m slightly more interested in movies just because I don’t have to be away for eight months,” he said. He noted his optimism about a renewed enthusiasm for cinema, citing the influence of platforms like Letterboxd as evidence of a “groundswell” of appreciation for films.

As Companion prepares to captivate audiences, Quaid’s admiration for the project reflects his continued passion for creative, boundary-pushing storytelling.
