Nicolas Cage has issued a passionate plea to his fellow actors, urging them not to let artificial intelligence interfere with their performances. The actor, who recently won Best Actor at the Saturn Awards for his role in Dream Scenario, took the opportunity during his acceptance speech to voice concerns about AI’s increasing influence on the entertainment industry.
In his speech, Cage expressed admiration for Dream Scenario director Kristoffer Borgli, but quickly shifted focus to what he sees as a growing threat: AI. “I am a big believer in not letting robots dream for us,” Cage said, emphasizing that robots cannot reflect the human condition. He warned that even small AI manipulations in an actor’s performance could eventually erode the integrity of the art form.
Cage argued that allowing AI to influence film performances would lead to art being driven solely by financial interests, devoid of human emotion and authenticity. “There will be no human response to life as we know it. It will be life as robots tell us to know it,” he added, urging artists to protect their authentic and honest expressions.
The actor’s comments come amid his concerns over body scans used in the upcoming TV series Spider-Man Noir, where digital images of his body may be used for purposes beyond his control. Cage has previously voiced his fear of AI technologies, stressing the importance of preserving the “heartbeat” of artists’ work and ensuring that their contributions are not distorted or exploited.
In addition to his AI concerns, Cage paid tribute to the late David Lynch, recalling the late filmmaker’s advice to embrace fun while working on Wild at Heart. “Not only is it okay, it’s necessary,” Lynch had told him, reflecting the creative spirit that Cage champions in his own work.
Cage’s outspoken stance highlights the growing debate surrounding AI’s role in the entertainment industry and the potential dangers it poses to artistic integrity.
