BEfriend initiative tackles loneliness in Hounslow

The BEfriend programme, launched in 2023, offers weekly visits or phone calls from trained volunteers, as well as opportunities for group outings.

A pioneering initiative to combat loneliness in Hounslow is yielding impressive results, with nine out of 10 residents reporting reduced feelings of isolation after just six months of support. The BEfriend programme, launched in 2023, offers weekly visits or phone calls from trained volunteers, as well as opportunities for group outings. In addition to addressing social isolation, the initiative has led to significant health benefits, with all participants reporting increased physical activity after six months of engagement.

BEfriend is a vital component of the Borough Based Partnership (BBP), a joint venture between Hounslow Council and local health organisations. The programme pairs volunteers with residents to provide personalised support tailored to individual needs, fostering new friendships and strengthening community ties. Volunteers help residents engage in community activities, attend health appointments, enjoy walks, or simply share a cup of tea and a chat at home.

“As we look forward to the year ahead, our goal is to help even more people experience the benefits of connection and companionship.”- Rachel Hill, Chief Executive, BEfriend

Addressing a Growing Need
The BBP introduced BEfriend after data revealed that Hounslow had a higher proportion of adults feeling lonely “often” or “always” compared to other parts of London and England. The programme specifically supports individuals with a wide range of health challenges, including dementia, mental health issues, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and sensory impairments.

Katrina Bell, Joint Commissioning Manager for Preventative Services and Supported Housing at Hounslow Council, highlighted the detrimental impact of social isolation on mental and physical health. “Socially isolated people are more likely to suffer from depression and less likely to stay physically active,” Bell explained. “Without social connections, individuals are more vulnerable to feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, which can lead to self-harm or even suicide. A befriender provides essential companionship, helping people reconnect with their local community, improving their health outcomes, and enhancing their quality of life.”

A Call for More Volunteers

BEfriend’s Chief Executive, Rachel Hill, described the programme’s early successes as “incredibly rewarding,” but noted the growing demand for volunteers. “We are fortunate to have dedicated volunteers who are committed to alleviating loneliness. However, the need is great, and we are calling for more volunteers to join us,” Hill said. Potential volunteers are encouraged to sign up via the charity’s website, where they will receive full training and ongoing support throughout their journey.

With the BEfriend initiative making a measurable difference in Hounslow, the Council and its partners are optimistic about expanding the programme’s reach in the coming years, helping more residents experience the transformative power of connection and companionship.
