This makes Camden the first local authority in the country to receive the top rating under the CQC’s new assessment system introduced in 2023.
Camden Council’s adult social care services have been rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), making it the first local authority in the country to receive the top rating under the CQC’s new assessment system introduced in 2023.
The report follows an inspection in November and places Camden among the best-performing councils in the country. Inspectors assessed the service across nine key areas, awarding an overall score of 89%, with five areas rated at an ‘exceptional standard.’
The CQC praised Camden’s “outstanding approach to partnerships and governance,” highlighting how this has led to “excellence in safe systems.” The Council’s work with local partners was also commended for effectively supporting residents facing mental health difficulties, loneliness, homelessness, and those from refugee and asylum-seeking communities. Care provisions and safeguarding practices were described as “excellent,” with a strong commitment to reducing inequalities reflected in staff feedback.
Inspectors noted that Camden staff “go the extra mile” for residents, delivering compassionate, innovative, and continually improving services.
In response, Councillor Richard Olszewski, Leader of Camden Council, called the achievement a “fantastic milestone” and credited staff for their dedication. “We are immensely proud to be the first council to receive an ‘outstanding’ rating under the CQC’s new system. This reflects the exceptional work of our adult social care staff, who go above and beyond every day to support our most vulnerable residents.”
Councillor Anna Wright, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care, echoed this sentiment, describing the rating as “a testament to the dedication, compassion, and expertise” of Camden’s adult social care teams. “The report highlights Camden’s positive and inclusive culture and our willingness to innovate. It also recognises the strong partnerships we have built to deliver the best possible outcomes for our residents.”
The report also highlighted key achievements, including Camden’s commitment to ensuring residents have choice and control over their care, the active involvement of carers from diverse backgrounds in shaping policy, and community-based initiatives tackling social isolation. The Council was praised for its citizen-led approach to adult social care, early intervention efforts, and innovative projects, such as using art to drive learning and improvement.
