Talacre Sports Centre to expand and modernise

The renovation forms part of a broader programme supported by the Council’s successful Levelling Up Fund bid, which aims to create a healthier, more connected neighbourhood

Talacre Community Sports Centre in Kentish Town is undergoing a significant transformation aimed at making the facility more sustainable, multi-purpose, and accessible to all. The ongoing renovation is set to improve the Centre’s offerings and better serve the local community for years to come.
To celebrate the completion of the project, community events will be held at the Centre this summer, with the renovations taking place in phases to allow the Centre to remain open throughout the process. The work focuses on enhancing both the infrastructure and the overall user experience.
Among the key improvements being made are 100 square meters of additional gymnastics space, which will accommodate up to 15 extra gymnasts per session, and a new multi-purpose studio designed to increase the capacity for adult classes to 25 per session. The new space will also house a fresh programme of activities, set to launch this summer.
The Centre is also adding a new classroom dedicated to young people’s physical education and training, alongside the creation of a new park-facing café. The café will feature public toilets and a Changing Places facility, ensuring greater accessibility for visitors.

In line with the modernisation efforts, Talacre Community Sports Centre will be made more accessible, with plans for the installation of a new lift and wheelchair storage area, as well as additional accessible toilets and improved access to the park. A revamped reception area will also welcome visitors.

Looking to the future, the Centre’s decarbonisation will begin once the remodel is complete. The works will replace the gas boilers with air source heat pumps, reducing approximately 85% of the carbon emissions associated with water heating and 44% associated with gas heating. Additionally, solar panels were installed in 2023, further reducing energy bills and enhancing the Centre’s sustainability over the next 20 years.
The renovation forms part of a broader programme supported by the Council’s successful Levelling Up Fund bid, which aims to create a healthier, more connected neighbourhood.

Councillor Nadia Shah, Cabinet Member for Voluntary Sector, Equalities and Cohesion, expressed enthusiasm for the transformation: “This remodel reflects what Talacre Community Sports Centre is all about—offering a diverse range of sports, activities, and new spaces for exercise and learning. The addition of a park-side café will provide a place for individuals and families of all ages to relax and connect. Making the Centre as accessible as possible has been a key priority, ensuring it remains a welcoming space for everyone in Camden.”
