Hillingdon Council has announced the temporary closure of Uxbridge Golf Course as it begins a search for a specialist operator to manage both Uxbridge and Haste Hill golf courses. The move comes in response to declining player numbers and significant financial losses incurred by the facilities.
Over the past year, both courses have faced challenges, including reduced participation and persistently wet weather, which have further impacted their viability. Despite increased fees, substantial council investment, and ongoing taxpayer subsidies, the courses have not been able to operate sustainably.
Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Environment, explained the rationale behind the decision:
“We’re very proud as a local authority to own several golf courses as part of Hillingdon’s leisure offerings. However, maintaining and running these courses has become a significant financial burden on taxpayers, especially given their limited usage. This is an unsustainable position.”
To address the issue, the council has appointed advisors to help secure a specialist operator who can bring the expertise needed to revitalise the courses and make them more appealing to a wider audience.
“With increasing pressures on council finances, maintaining and running these courses has become unsustainable.”

Uxbridge Golf Course will temporarily close from Tuesday, 14 January, with staff redeployed to Haste Hill. Should the council’s efforts to find a new operator prove unsuccessful, Haste Hill Golf Course may also face temporary closure.
Cllr Lavery added:
“Our aim is to ensure that residents continue to enjoy access to quality leisure facilities while delivering value for money. A specialist operator will bring tailored solutions that the council cannot provide on its own.”
The council’s decision highlights its commitment to balancing leisure provision with financial responsibility for the benefit of all residents.
