Wandsworth Council has been recognised nationally for its innovative approach to shaping the borough’s nightlife, taking home a prestigious Pineapple Award for Community Engagement.
The borough’s Night Time Strategy was praised for its inclusive, borough-wide consultation and its focus on safety, accessibility and wellbeing after dark. Judges from the Design Council described it as a “trailblazing initiative—the first night-time strategy of its kind”.
The strategy, which outlines a vision for Wandsworth’s evening and night-time economy, was shaped by extensive public input, including voices from marginalised groups. It sets priorities around safety—particularly women’s safety—support for night-time workers, and expanding night-time activities beyond just eating and drinking.
“The project tackled critical issues and extended its conclusions well beyond the built environment,” said judges. “A state-of-the-art example of how engagement can be innovative, inclusive and impactful.”
Early outcomes from the strategy include:
- Upgrades to Roehampton, including lighting and public art
- Improvements to the Falcon Road underpass
- Implementation of the Ask for Clive scheme to protect LGBTQ+ people
- A revived Pubwatch and new Safe Space in Clapham Junction
- Police operations targeting harassment
- Exploring anti-harassment training as part of venue licensing
Deputy Leader of the Council, Kemi Akinola, said the award reflects a deep commitment to hearing and acting on residents’ concerns.
“We knew everyone experiences the night-time differently, so we worked incredibly hard to ensure all voices were heard,” she said. “This strategy is just the beginning—we’ll continue using it to guide long-term improvements to make our borough safer and more welcoming for everyone.”
Another Wandsworth project, public realm upgrades on Totterdown Street in Tooting, was shortlisted in the Community Space category.
