In an interview with FourFourTwo magazine, Sainz spoke candidly about his goals, acknowledging the challenge ahead but expressing unwavering confidence in his abilities
Norwich City winger Borja Sainz, 24, has expressed his ambition to become a regular feature in the Spanish national team. Having previously represented his country at Under-19 level, Sainz is determined to continue improving and to eventually earn a place in Spain’s senior squad.
In an interview with FourFourTwo magazine, Sainz spoke candidly about his goals, acknowledging the challenge ahead but expressing unwavering confidence in his abilities. “I want to play for Spain. I played before,” he said, referring to his youth team appearances. “It will be difficult, but I want to do it and I want to play in the Premier League. I need to keep working hard – that’s the most important thing.”
Sainz emphasized his commitment to continuous improvement, stating, “When each day passes, tomorrow you wake up and say, ‘OK, I am better than yesterday’ – better person, better player. Every day, I need to go step by step.”
His ambition is clear, and the young winger’s determination is underscored by his hard work on the pitch. Despite his progress, Sainz’s season has been marred by a six-match ban he received in January for an incident during a match against Sunderland, when he was deemed to have spat at Chris Mepham. Reflecting on the suspension, he admitted to feeling disappointed by the setback. “When they called me and said I couldn’t play for six matches, I was like, ‘S*** Borja, what did you do? You were the top scorer and you were winning games for the team,’” he said. “It wasn’t all about me – I was an important player for the team.”
Before the ban, Sainz had been in outstanding form, scoring 15 goals in his first 18 Championship appearances. This impressive tally came as a surprise to the player himself, who acknowledged that while he always expects to contribute, the number of goals he scored was unexpected. “I didn’t expect that. I expect to score goals, assist and play well, and last year I scored goals too, but not as many as this season.”
Sainz’s humility and focus on team success are evident in his outlook. “I don’t say, ‘Come on, you need to score more.’ That’s not my attitude. I just think that when I play and I enjoy it, goals and assists will come. The most important thing is to help the team.”
As he looks to overcome his suspension and continue his rise in the Championship, Sainz remains determined to maintain his focus on improving each day. With his sights set on the Premier League and a place in Spain’s national team, the winger’s journey is one to watch closely in the coming seasons.
