In a rare move for American and British productions, Wild Horse Nine will be shot on location in Rapa Nui, one of the most isolated inhabited places on Earth
Steve Buscemi, the 67-year-old actor known for his roles in Fargo and Reservoir Dogs, is set to star in the upcoming dark comedic drama Wild Horse Nine, directed by Martin McDonagh, the filmmaker behind The Banshees of Inisherin. Buscemi will join a star-studded cast, including Sam Rockwell, John Malkovich, and Parker Posey, with filming set to begin later this month on the remote and iconic Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui.
In a rare move for American and British productions, Wild Horse Nine will be shot on location in Rapa Nui, one of the most isolated inhabited places on Earth. Known for its lack of modern conveniences, the island is governed by the Rapa Nui National Park, making it a unique and pristine backdrop for the film. Buscemi’s role was initially slated for Mark Ruffalo, but the actor will now bring his distinctive talents to the character.
While plot details remain under wraps, McDonagh’s long-time collaborators, Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin, are producing the film. McDonagh is known for his dark humor and sharp storytelling, and Wild Horse Nine is expected to carry the same distinctively dark comedic tone that has earned him critical acclaim.
Buscemi’s extensive career spans across numerous iconic films, and the actor fondly recalls his time working with some of Hollywood’s best, including Quentin Tarantino. Reflecting on his role as Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs, Buscemi praised Tarantino’s unwavering confidence and vision. He recalled, “The amazing thing about Quentin was that even on the first film, he had such confidence in himself and what he was doing, and what he had written and how he wanted to direct it.” Buscemi admired Tarantino’s enthusiasm and his commitment to his vision, noting that the director had camera moves already scripted and stood by them during filming.
Buscemi also expressed his admiration for the Coen brothers, with whom he collaborated on The Big Lebowski and other films. He highlighted how in-sync the brothers were and how much they enjoyed the filmmaking process. “It was working with two brothers that were just so in sync. That’s what always impressed me,” he said, emphasizing the ease and joy of their collaboration. Buscemi also mentioned that he was excited to see their individual projects, as well as any future works they might collaborate on.
As for Wild Horse Nine, the involvement of McDonagh, a master of dark comedy, suggests that Buscemi’s character will likely be both nuanced and compelling, contributing to the film’s highly anticipated release. Fans of both the actor and the filmmaker will surely be looking forward to what promises to be another memorable project in Buscemi’s illustrious career.
