Hundreds of residents are settling into high-quality, permanent council homes at Greenwich Millennium Village, marking a major step in the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s commitment to tackling housing needs.
Families and individuals who were once on the housing register are now settling into new council homes at Greenwich Millennium Village, bringing a fresh start to over 300 residents.
The Royal Borough of Greenwich recently welcomed the new tenants at a special event attended by Council Leader Cllr Anthony Okereke and Greenwich Peninsula ward councillors, Cllr Denise Scott-McDonald, Cllr Nick Williams, and Cllr David Gardner. The event introduced tenants to their new community and provided them with essential support from the council.
Cllr Okereke highlighted the council’s ongoing commitment to housing:
“We’re delighted that 100 households, most of whom are families with children, are now living in high-quality, permanent council homes. That is more than 300 people who were previously in difficult housing situations now enjoying stability and security.”
Funded through a combination of council resources and a grant from the Greater London Authority, the new one, two, and three-bedroom flats are a key part of the council’s strategy to provide much-needed social housing.
Beyond providing homes, the council is also ensuring tenants receive the support they need. One tenant, whose child has autism, has been introduced to specialist services that will help fund a carer, allowing her to focus on training and employment.
Residents have spoken warmly about their new homes and the positive impact on their lives.
“The flat is lovely,” said one couple. “We were really impressed with the quality, like underfloor heating. There’s even a community centre where we can host children’s parties.”
Another tenant described the change as life-altering:
“Living in a serene environment has made a huge difference compared to where we were before. It’s peaceful, clean, and has had a positive impact on our family.”
Cllr Okereke reaffirmed the council’s dedication to addressing the housing crisis in Greenwich:
“Whether it’s buying or building, we’re delivering new housing for people who really need it. Our priority is to ensure these homes remain safe and secure, with ongoing support for tenants.”
The completion of these homes at Greenwich Millennium Village is just one step in the borough’s broader efforts to provide high-quality housing for residents in need.
