Hackney’s £5m Green Investment Returns

With a target of raising £5 million by 2030, the initiative seeks to fund various sustainability projects, including solar panel installations, energy-efficient windows in schools, and the borough’s expanding EV charging network.

Hackney Council has relaunched its Green Investment programme, offering residents and businesses another opportunity to invest in local climate projects while earning a fixed annual return. With a target of raising £5 million by 2030, the initiative seeks to fund various sustainability projects, including solar panel installations, energy-efficient windows in schools, and the borough’s expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging network.

Following the success of last year’s initial £600,000 fundraising round, the second phase of the investment scheme is now open, aiming to raise an additional £500,000 towards the overall goal. This latest phase will directly support the installation of energy-saving windows at a local school, as well as other green infrastructure projects across Hackney.

The scheme allows people to invest from as little as £5, offering a 4.2% fixed interest rate per year over a five-year term. By participating, investors not only contribute to vital climate action but also benefit from a secure financial return. The investment programme is part of Hackney’s broader mission to create a cleaner, greener borough by funding projects that reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and support renewable energy generation.

“My thanks to our residents and the investors who made last year’s Green Investment offer such a great success.”

Robert Chapman, Cabinet member

Hackney Council has outlined key areas where the funds will be allocated, including:

• Installing solar panels and implementing energy efficiency measures in council homes and local schools to reduce bills and emissions.

• Expanding the borough’s EV charging infrastructure, which is already recognised as a sector-leading initiative.

• Replacing windows in schools to improve energy efficiency and create healthier learning environments.

Councillor Sarah Young, Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment, and Transport, emphasised the importance of the initiative: “Hackney is leading the way as one of the UK’s most ambitious councils on climate action. From solar panels to energy-saving windows, we’re investing in a greener, healthier, and fairer future—and residents can too. Every investment will help fund local green projects, making our borough more sustainable, reducing bills, and providing a secure return for investors.”

Councillor Robert Chapman, Cabinet Member for Finance, Insourcing, and Customer Services, expressed gratitude for the community’s support in the previous funding round and encouraged further participation: “My thanks to our residents and the investors who made last year’s Green Investment offer such a great success. Following this, we’re again raising funds to invest in green infrastructure, not only as a key part of our climate action plan to create a greener, healthier borough but also as a cost-effective way to deliver these projects. Hackney’s green investment is vital in helping us deliver on our ambitious climate goals, despite the budget challenges councils across the country are facing.”

The investment process is being managed by Abundance Investment, a leading platform specialising in ethical and sustainable investments. Abundance has worked with 13 councils across the UK to facilitate similar investment schemes, raising over £11 million since 2020. Investors will receive returns every six months, which can be withdrawn or reinvested at their discretion.

The investment period is open until 31 May, giving individuals and businesses the opportunity to contribute to Hackney’s sustainability goals while securing a financial return. To find out more and invest, visit abundanceinvestment.com/council/hackney.

Hackney Council remains committed to its climate action goals and believes that community-driven investment is a powerful tool in funding vital green projects. By participating in the Green Investment programme, residents and businesses alike can play a direct role in shaping a more sustainable future for the borough.
